Risks
I am an entrepreneur and I love the good, the bad, AND the ugly that comes with the title. Now, let me give you what I mean by ‘love’.
Love is a committment. I won’t get spiritual on you, but in the bible every place you find the word ‘love’ you can replace it with a form of the word ‘committment’ and you’ll get a crystal clear picture of the meaning. I’ve learned the fact that smart entrepreneurs do not take risk so much as they manage risk, and that is true more often than not. But that does not mean that entrepreneurs moving forward are not always at risk. They are.
In the stock market the higher the risk the higher the potential gain. That is not always true in the business world, but often there is a corollary and that is Not to be confused with cause.
The management of risk is a skill that is learned with experience.
And too often experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want! I’ve had success and I’ve had the opposite, but
as I’ve stated before you have to keep getting up to bat no matter how many times you strike out.
For example, some of you know I’ve been in the insurance industry for over 20 years (That’s almost half my life…Crikey!
)I took a risk communicating how I created wealth in real estate. I took risk in creating and putting on a seminar to teach others how to do the same. That has worked out very well. I am taking a risk with the continuous creation of a central clearing house designed to help agents create more money in an agency AND outside of the agency (The Agent Center.com) I take risk advocating and pushing fellow agents to beware of having only one source of income. I take risk in openly communicating that most agencies are ‘rental cars and you never wax a rented car. Many of the risks Ive taken have had its rocky moments early, causing me great anxiety, but most eventually steady and turn out to be a huge success with great long-term potential. I am at risk investing money, time and reputation in another major project that will help agents explode their income.
But some people are just not mentally and emotionally equipped to live at risk day in, day out, and they shouldnt be entrepreneurs. They will “play scared and that will cost them. I am not passing judgement one way or the other. Merely stating the facts.
Business deals gone bad. Marketing campaigns that flopped. People invested in who disappointed or betrayed. Employees….and Financial disasters. Emotional train wrecks. Enough egg on my face to make sunny side up AND whatever your preference of omelet for the entire continent of Asia! Of course none of it was designed with failure in mind…and it was all done with the specific and strategic goal of creating ‘win-win’ scenerios.
Yet, When a sports team gives it’s record it always gives the number of ‘wins’ first. Why? Because Only success matters. Do you take risks or do you let risks take you?

Thad,
One of the things that you taught me to minimize risk, is to come out with products or services before they are ready. While this seems at first to be crazy; the cart before the horse. This is a super inexpensive way of testing.
Remember when mom ordered something from the Sears catalog and for some reason it didn’t come in for Christmas? She gave you a gift with a picture of what you were going to get. You can do the same thing with your product or service for your business. Simply announce it and if there is zero response to it, you wasted no money or time developing it. However if the response is enormous, you can develop it quickly and start selling it, knowing that it will be a success.
One example of my business this year was putting out products that are not quite ready yet. I sold one of them, then quickly within two hours, finished it and made $500. I sold it and then completed it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Entrepreneurs everywhere.
